Konepruske Caves

The Koněprusy Caves were formed over 400 million years ago in ancient limestone. For centuries, they remained hidden — until 1950, when a quarry explosion accidentally revealed the upper chambers. Since then, explorers have mapped nearly 2 kilometers of tunnels, halls, and unique formations.

What makes these caves special isn’t just their size, but their character. From “the Treasury” hall with cascading stalactites to chambers with fossilized animal bones, this is a living museum sculpted by water and time.

Character & feeling of this place

Walking through Koněprusy feels like entering the belly of the Earth. The echo of dripping water, the cool breath of stone, the silence only broken by footsteps — it’s immersive and oddly calming. And the deeper you go, the more you realize: nature is the best artist.

• They were discovered thanks to dynamite.

  The caves were accidentally uncovered in 1950 during limestone blasting at a nearby quarry. Not your usual entrance door.

• Counterfeiters once used the upper chamber.

  In the 15th century, a hidden workshop inside the caves was used to produce fake coins. Archaeologists found molds, tools, and traces of silver alloy.

• There’s a fossilized woolly rhinoceros inside.

  Animal bones from the Ice Age were found here — including a woolly rhino, cave bear, and hyena. So technically, it's also a prehistoric zoo.
