On the way to Konopiště
Enjoy the ride
Your journey begins with a private pick-up in Prague. The drive takes about one hour through scenic Bohemian countryside. Relax in your air-conditioned car while your English-speaking driver shares stories about Czech castles and noble families.
Upon arrival at destination
You’ll explore the interiors of Konopiště with an official guide — from the armoury and grand halls to the private apartments of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie. Afterwards, stroll through the rose garden and the deer park, or enjoy coffee in the courtyard café before returning to Prague.
Konopiště’s owner, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, had a passion for hunting — and it shows. The castle walls are covered with more than 100,000 hunting trophies. It’s impressive, slightly eerie, and definitely unforgettable.
Don’t miss the rose garden, originally designed for the Archduke’s wife Sophie. It’s said he personally tended the roses when home from his travels — proof that even emperors needed to unwind.
And if you hear a strange cry from the park, don’t worry — it’s probably just the peacocks showing off. They’ve been doing it for a hundred years, and they’re not planning to stop.
The Story of Konopiste
Origin of the Konopiště
Konopiště Castle was originally founded as a Gothic fortress in the late 13th century. Over time, it was transformed into a Renaissance and later a Baroque residence. Its most famous owner, Archduke Franz Ferdinand d’Este, purchased it in 1887 and turned it into a luxurious aristocratic home filled with art, armour, and exotic memorabilia.
After his assassination in Sarajevo in 1914, the castle became a silent witness to history. Today, it stands perfectly preserved — an elegant reminder of Europe’s final imperial era before the world changed forever.
Character & feeling of this place
Konopiště feels peaceful yet regal. The smell of pine from the park, the echo of footsteps in marble corridors, and the distant cry of peacocks — all merge into a timeless atmosphere. It’s less about grandeur, more about quiet dignity.
