With its massive towers, Gothic chapel, and mysterious dungeons, Křivoklát offers a real taste of medieval life, untouched by tourist gloss.
On the way to Křivoklat Castle
Enjoy the ride
The drive from Prague to Křivoklát takes around 1 hour and 20 minutes. Your English-speaking driver will pick you up at your chosen location, and the route passes through scenic forest landscapes and traditional Czech villages.
Upon arrival at destination
You’ll explore the castle with an official guide — walking through royal halls, a Gothic chapel, the vast library, and prison cells that once held dangerous nobles. There’s also a small courtyard café and gift shop where you can decompress before heading back to the 21st century.
If you hear chains rattling in the dungeon, don’t panic — it’s probably just part of the exhibition. Or is it?
The castle houses a rather graphic collection of medieval torture devices, so sensitive souls be warned. On the other hand, it’s a fascinating insight into justice… before human rights were invented.
And make sure to climb the Great Tower — the view of the forested hills below is worth every narrow, winding step (and minor leg workout).
The Story of Krivoklat Castle
Origin of the city
Křivoklát Castle was founded in the 12th century as a royal hunting lodge, later expanded into a major royal residence by the Přemyslid and Luxembourg dynasties. It served as a favorite retreat for Bohemian kings — and sometimes as a prison for their enemies.
Throughout its long history, it survived fires, wars, and political upheaval. Today it remains a stunning example of early Gothic architecture, preserved in a way that still whispers with stories from another era.
Character & feeling of this place
There’s something raw and real about Křivoklát. The chill of the stone walls, the echoes in the tower, the forest pressing in from all sides — it feels like a page from an old book that no one dares to rewrite. It’s less polished, more powerful.
Interesting facts

-
