On the way to Karlovy Vary
Enjoy the ride
After your private pick-up in Prague, you'll head northeast through picturesque countryside. The drive takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes. Along the way, your English-speaking driver can share stories of Bohemian folklore or let the forest views do the talking.
Upon arrival at destination
You’ll explore marked hiking trails that range from easy loops to scenic lookouts with breathtaking panoramas. There's no rush — your driver will wait nearby while you lose track of time among the stones. Picnic optional but highly recommended.
If you plan to wear high heels here, please bring someone to carry you. This is a hike, not a fashion runway. Sturdy shoes are a must — the rocks don't care how good you look.
Some paths are narrow enough to make you question that second slice of cake. But don't worry, you’re not the first to wiggle sideways through a sandstone crack with dignity intact.
And keep your eyes open — local legends say that those who find the “stone gate of love” are destined to return. Whether for romance or just better weather, who knows?
The Story of Prachovske Rocks
Origin of the city
The Prachovske Rocks were formed from Cretaceous-era sandstone and sculpted by wind, water, and frost into the dramatic shapes we see today. For centuries, they’ve inspired painters, poets, and wanderers — and served as shelter for prehistoric tribes.
In the 19th century, the area became a popular tourist destination and hiking haven. Today, it’s part of the Bohemian Paradise Geopark and remains one of the most beloved nature spots in the Czech Republic.
Character & feeling of this place
It’s like walking through a dream carved in stone. The quiet between trees, the sudden reveal of a view, the earthy smell of moss-covered paths — it’s not just a hike, it’s an experience. A reminder of how small we are, and how beautiful that can be.
Interesting facts
-
Several fairy tale movies were filmed here.
The unique rock formations made this area a favorite backdrop for Czech and German fantasy films. No dragons were harmed during filming (probably).
-
You can pass through a natural stone gate.
“Myší díra” (“Mouse Hole”) is a narrow passage just wide enough for a human — barely. Bonus points if you make it through with your backpack on.
-
There's a panoramic viewpoint called “The Emperor’s View”.
Named after Emperor Franz Joseph I, who admired the view in 1906. If it impressed a monarch, you can bet it’s worth the climb.
